As if it's not hard enough already to hold onto a bike in New York.
Yesterday the City Council considered legislation that would allow police to confiscate bicycles from anyone over age 12 found riding on the sidewalk. The council also wants to increase the fine from $100 to $250.
"We tend to view this as a quality-of-life issue, but it goes beyond that," said Councilman Charles Millard (R-Manhattan), who said he introduced the bill on behalf of elderly people who have been knocked down and injured by cyclists. "It's a public health issue."
The council also introduced bills yesterday that would expand the liability of businessess who deploy messengers and delivery personnel.
Another bill would quadruple fines, from $25 to $100, against motorists
who stop or park in a bicycle lane.
