Our report on the discovery of the frozen body of mountain climber George Leigh Mallory on the slopes of Mount Everest
[EXPLORATION, May 17] prompted us to look in the archives for other tales of mountaineering adventure--with happier endings.

In September 1988, Stacy Allison, a contractor from Portland, Ore., on the right in the photograph, and Peggy Luce, a bicycle messenger from Seattle, became the first American women to climb Everest's 29,028-ft. summit.
