"INTERNATIONAL MESSENGER APPRECIATION DAY"
OCTOBER 9,1997
| WHEREAS: | Toronto's more than fifty bike courier companies employ over 500 bike messengers to deliver an estimated 1.2 million deliveries every year. This has resulted in a need for approximately 2500 fewer cars in the downtown core every day; and |
| WHEREAS: | on October 9, cities around the world formally recognize messengers' contributions; and |
| WHEREAS: | there are many benfits to bicycle couriers. Such as, a solution to the problems of pollution and congestion; provision of a value-added service, and promotion of year-round cycling as a viable form of transportation and economic development. |
| NOW, THEREFORE: | I, Mel Lastman, Mayor of the City of North York, do hereby proclaim October 9, 1997 as "International Messenger Appreciation Day" in the City of North York and urge our residents to recognize the contributions made by bicycle couriers. |
