CHRIS CREW

Mess Press, Issue #3, 1992

I came back from the holidays only to find out that one of my old. friends was dead. ...CHRIS CREW...

I first got to know him at Cal + Front, where they were always being bugged by cops because they would work on there cycles leaving lots of oily mess. I helped him move into his first real base at 16th and Vel. A lot of action there. His start of racing. He could wheely on a y motor! (Sorry I don't like writing these things.)

The best of him I ever saw was when he rented a HORSE. He got some pizza boxes and wrote PONY EXPRESS on them. Then he was dresseed up like a kid in a little cowboy outit, checkered, shirt neck scarf and boots. With his boyish face. SHIT were we all cracked up!! He went to 111 Pine and delivered a packege, the horse took the dump as I pulled up the guard came out and said

"The thing just made a big mess"

Chris replied "no problem there is a wheel barrel behind me in case that happens." NOT!!!

Good luck in Your next life.

It is with deep regret

that we must inform you of the passing of our founder,

Christopher Allan Crew.

Chris died December 19 at his home on Twin Peaks at the age of 31.

The funeral service was Monday, December 23 at Evergreen Morturary

with internment at Cypress Lawn Cemetary in Colma.

Chris founded Pony Express (which later became Lightening Express) in 1983 with a vision - to provide San Francisco and the Bay Area witha unique and exciting service. His love of motorcycling inspired him to use motorcycle messengers to offer the fastest deliveries possible. Lightning's beginnings were humble, with Chris doing business out of a telephone booth at the corner of California and Front. Through hard work and perserverence, Chris built a thriving business which provided employment for many people over the years, most of whom became his friends. At the same time he excelled as a top American Federation of Motorcyclists racer and as the only American in the daring Isle of Man race in 1989, '90, and '91. In both his business and his many sporting endeavors, Chris was an inspiration to those who knew him.

The staff at Lightning Express wishes to reaffirm their commitment to provide you with best delivery service possible. Lightning Express will carry on in Chris Crew's memory, expanding upon his vision and building the kind of business that would make him proud.
