BOSTON (AP) - Mayor Thomas Menino has approved new regulations that will require Boston bicycle courier services to carry $200,000 insurance policies and allow police to revoke their licenses.
Menino signed the bill Monday. Now it goes to the state Legislature as a home rule petition and must be approved there before it can be enacted.
The new regulations were prompted by the October collision between former School Committee member William Spring and a bike messenger that left Spring severely injured with brain and facial injuries.
At a city council hearing last month, bicycle messengers and their advocates spoke out against the proposed new rules, claiming that insurance policies for bicycle messengers can be difficult to obtain.
The new rules would also require messengers working in the city to display a visible license plate on each bike, wear helmets, and establish a fine schedule for couriers who fail to carry a license.
