There could be a crackdown on bicycle messengers who speed through the streets and sidewalks of downtown Boston.
The City Council's Public Safety Committee holds a hearing later today on a proposal to make bike couriers more accountable.
The panel will receive written testimony from former Boston School Committee member William Spring. He's still recovering from serious injuries suffered when a courier ran into him last fall on Commonwealth Avenue.
In the future, city officials may require courier services to carry insurance on each of its messengers.
The plan would also require easily identifiable license plates and large armbands. And it would give the Boston police commissioner power to revoke or suspend courier licenses.
